A full-floor sixty-eighth-storey penthouse above Central Park. Smoked oak, matte steel, and absolute silence at altitude.
The Obsidian is the top floor of a slender supertall on Central Park South, one of twelve residences in the building and the only one with unobstructed park-to-harbour views on all four sides. At 68 storeys, weather is a material: the penthouse is above the cloud line on eighteen days a year.
Voss & Stern Atelier specified the interior entirely in matte finishes: honed black granite, hand-rubbed smoked oak, and brushed gunmetal steel. There is no gloss anywhere. The effect, especially at night, is of a room that contains the city rather than reflects it.
Five bedrooms, six bathrooms, a cinema room, and a 120-metre wraparound terrace with a glazed infinity pool. The building provides a private concierge floor, a dedicated elevator, and a separate staff entrance.
